چکیده

For the purposes of identifying microlensing events, the POINT-AGAPE collaboration has been monitoring the Andromeda galaxy (M31) for three seasons (1999-2001) with the Wide Field Camera on the Isaac Newton Telescope. In each season, data are taken for one hour per night for roughly sixty nights during the six months that M31 is visible. The two 33×33 fields of view straddle the central bulge, northwards and southwards. We have calculated the locations, periods and brightness of 35414 variable stars in M31 as a by-product of the microlensing search. The variables are classified according to their period and brightness. Rough correspondences with classical types of variable star (such as population I and II Cepheids, Miras and semi-regular long-period variables) are established. The spatial distribution of population I Cepheids is clearly associated with the spiral arms, while the central concentration of the Miras and long-period variables varies noticeably, the brighter and the shorter period Miras being much more centrally concentrated. A crucial role in the microlensing experiment is played by the asymmetry signal – the excess of events expected in the southern or more distant fields as measured against those in the northern or nearer fields. It was initially assumed that the variable star populations in M31 would be symmetric with respect to the major axis, and thus variable stars would not be a serious contaminant for measuring the microlensing asymmetry signal. We demonstrate that this assumption is not correct. All the variable star distributions are asymmetric primarily because of the effects of differential extinction associated with the dust lanes. The size and direction of the asymmetry of the variable stars is measured as a function of period and brightness. The implications of this discovery for the successful completion of the microlensing experiments towards M31 are discussed.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

AGAPE: andromeda gravitational amplification pixel experiment

The aim of the AGAPE (Andromeda Gravitational Ampli cation Pixel Experiment), experiment which has been rst proposed in June 1992 is to examine the distribution of massive astrophysical compact halo objects ((MACHO's) which possibly are in the galactic haloes and which could account for the missing dark matter. Those objects have a mass which is a fraction of solar mass and could be detected by...

LINEAR PULSATION CHARACTERISTICS OF MIRA VARIABLE STARS

The linear adiabatic pulsation-periods of Mira variable stars have been derived. Approximately 2701[1]models were calculated for M = 0.7 MΘ to 2 MΘ stars with radii from 180 RΘ to 340 RΘ and luminosities from 2800 LΘ to 10,000 LΘ. The chemical composition of all models is (X,Z) = (0.7,0.02). From the result of this study, linear relations on Luminosity-Period-Mass relationship and luminosity-pe...

Pixel Analysis of the Eros Data

A The work presented here has been done on data collected by the EROS collaboration using a method developped by the AGAPE collaboration. Abstract Perspectives ooered by the Pixel Method applied on the LMC are shown. We use the 1 st year of EROS CCD data on the LMC for our analysis. We give an overview of a preliminary sample of Semi-Regular and Irregular Red variable stars detected in a 1 0:4 ...

AGAPE: a search for dark matter towards M31 by microlensing effects on unresolved stars

M 31 is a very tempting target for a microlensing search of compact objects in galactic haloes. It is the nearest large galaxy, it probably has its own dark halo, and its tilted position with respect to the line of sight provides an unmistakable signature of microlensing. However most stars of M 31 are not resolved and one has to use the “pixel method”: monitor the pixels of the image rather th...
